Securities lending strength persists in October, says EquiLend NGT statistics

Strong securities lending trading activity witnessed during the first three quarters of 2021 has continued into October, according to EquiLend.

More than 2.3 million trades were conducted on its NGT securities finance trading platform during the month of October, with a notional value of US$2.45 trillion executed on the platform.

These figures represent a 21 per cent rise on trading volumes for October 2020 and 30 per cent YoY rise in trading value.

Looking month-on-month, these October trading numbers are consistent with September, with trade volumes down slightly from 2.4 million, but with notional value executed on NGT remaining broadly unchanged on the preceding month at US$2.4 trillion.

The NGT platform experienced a record trading day on 21 September with more than 126,000 transactions executed worth US$173 billion.

EquiLend, the New-York based securities finance trading, post-trade and market data specialist, indicates that the SPDR S&P500 ETF (SPY) was the most-traded security globally on NGT during October, with Tesla second and Visa third.

October delivered a strong rise in lending activity for South and Central American government debt, with fixed income balances for the region rising 61 per cent month-on-month.
